There’s caution in the first blooms of Spring in this gorgeous, melancholy tapestry Becca Tremmel weaves. Not since Fiona Apple’s “Sullen Girl” have I heard a more beautiful metaphor for a loss of innocence. The sonic landscape is generally comforting like daybreak on a warm May morning, but there are tiny hints at something unsteady and sinister. It calls to mind the manic pulchritude of late-stage Nick Drake on the guitar. The deeper story behind this song is a mystery, but that may also be part of the allure. Like nature itself, this one is simultaneously delicate and cruel; drawing you in with its beauty, but reminding you that danger may be waiting in the weeds.
