Alyssa Flaherty - "Little Ugly"

Alyssa Flaherty - "Little Ugly"

Sometimes there's only a thin aesthetic veneer that separates the populous from a walking hurricane of a human being. Alyssa Flaherty makes it sound like a tube of concealer is all that stands between an oblivious populous and her fury. "Little Ugly's" narrative is a playful exploration of the effort to present a well-groomed, well-mannered front despite feeling like a hot mess underneath. Flaherty's lyrics vividly depict this struggle, painting a picture of a woman barely concealing her contempt for her job and the people around her. She tries her best to do right by her parents, who taught her how to present a courteous, meticulously manicured front, but she honestly is just over it. These themes are complimented by the musical choices around them. Alyssa's soulful vocal delivery enhances the impact of the lyrics, conveying frustration and burnout in equal measure. It perfectly encapsulates the conflict between her polished exterior and her tumultuous inner world. Instrumentally the country roots are evident, but they are enriched with blues and soul influences that give the track its unique character. The Hammond B3 organ is a standout element, infusing the song with a soulful, Beale Street flavor that complements the lyrical content expertly. "Little Ugly" is polished yet retains an authentic edge... it's a skillful example of execution how a little bit of gloss can contain the ferocity that's hiding just behind.
